Gao Pianh woke up, told about what he’d seen in his dream to his subordinates and wrote a poem on that matter… As the legend goes, the spirit resided near the Day Than River. It often rained and waves went high there. People who sailed by entered into the temple, offered prayers and then they were safe to sail amidst the river: neither wind, nor waves posed a threat to them.” 1 There is a legend saying that one of the further embodiments of the Spirit of Rock was Giao Vu who fought with the Tay Sons in the 18 th century 2 . According to scientists’ opinion, the tale ofAn Duong Vuong killing or expelling Kao Lo reflects the social crisis in Au Lac, penetration of lowlanders’ beliefs into the life of highlanders, marine features (dragon) start appearing in the image of the spirit of rock 3 . According to P. V. Pozner, historicity of Kao Lo’s personality who suffered from plots appears to be probable, the entire legend of An Duong Vuong bears historicity in itself and depicts actual events as well as early religious beliefs of the Viets 4 . As one legend goes, the devilry that prevented An Duon Vuong from building Koloa fortress was expelled by the Master of Northern Sky, a Lord of North in the Chinese mythology, and the lord of water, he was usually depicted with his hair down, bear-footed, and standing on a turtle enveloped by a serpent. As the legend has it, the devils concentrated in the Nhoi village (modern central region of the fortress) and preventedAn Duong Vuong from building Koloa fortress. With the help of the Master of Northern Sky who had expelled the evil spirits, the fortress was built to the end. An Duong Vuong set a temple to honour him, he would come there and render honours to him all the time. At present days, during festival rituals, a person who embodies An Duong Vuong sits in a litter, arrives at Nhoi temple, steps out and bows. When An Duong Vuong worshipped the spirit of Nhoi temple, it meant that the ruler adored the spirit who guarded his lands. The initial spirit who helpedAn Duong Vuong was likely to be a spirit of rock associated with the image of Kao Lo — a servant for An Duong Vuong who manufactured the wonder crossbow. Later, he was replaced by the Master of Northern Sky. An Duong Vuon lost his country, but the spirit of rock was still adored 5 . An Duong Vuong’s daughter Mi Chau was also associated with the rock.
