Still all my heart and all my love, unchanged remains with you, My undivided loyalty, unchanged remains with you 1 . The same phrase “even if my bones become ashes” — became a common symbol of faithfulness and has been used in this meaning in other texts of the same genre but belonging to much later periods. E. g. sijo of an unknown author (18–19 th century): My beloved, who enters my room Through the edge of window, When the lantern is withering, And my beloved, whom I embrace when laying down, At the fifth watch bell - Could I forget No matter if white bones turn into ashes Thus, the poem applies the mode of using traditional symbols with the help cita- tion, and the text in the whole alludes to the classical poem. The objective of using these common symbols and allusion to a widely known is to emphasize the ideas of faithfulness, of strengthening the ties, and unchanging life-attitudes. In this case, the poem uses a commonly familiar symbol, though there are also cases when a symbol may be not recognized by some readers, not well-versed in pre-modern literature. In such cases, the poem acquires several levels of understand- ing following its multi-leveled structure. 3. Structural specifics, models, space and time patterns This is the group with most numerous examples and with a possibility of uncon- scious usage. Space and time models are often a part of general weltanschauung, some of them were used in pre-modern literature also as a manifestation of it. With this regard, their meaning is often more than just a key to understanding a certain fragment of a text. The space models found in many texts are as follows: the basic triad “Heaven- Earth-Human” ( 詏襽蝸 cheon-ji-in ), “mountains+waters” 芄莤 sansu or 笹芄 gangsan, “Light above+Sound below”, and others.
