Sarek Katarzyna (Jagiellonian University, Poland) Evil, Egoistic, Independent, Liberated — The Image of Woman in the Selected Works of Can Xue Can Xue, one of the most interesting names in the contemporary Chinese literature, openly declares herself a feminist and often centers her novels and stories around unusual female characters that defy all stereotypes. As seen in the stories “Hut on the Mountain” or “Old Floating Cloud”, a mother in Can Xue’s prose is often neither good nor tender. She does not sacrifice herself for her children and can be selfish, cruel and repugnant instead. Can Xue’s mothers stand in stark contrast with how they have traditionally been depicted in the Chinese literature. The author robs them of the halo of saint- hood and shows the world their dark side. Some other writings by Can Xue, p.ex. her novel “Five Spice Street”, give rise to original, stereotype-defying female characters. Can Xue’s female characters destroy the image of women as created by men, and which has been not more than an expression of their innermost desires and longings.
