Professor Ye Jiaying has delivered seven lectures to the wide public probably around 2010, later these lectures have been typed down by several different editors and compiled into a book “Seven lectures on Talks of ci in the human world” ( Renjian cihua qi jiang Ӫ䯃䂎 䂡г䅋 ) first published by Beijing University Press in 2014, original text of Wang Guowei`s work was added as a supplement. This edition of Ye Jiaying`s lectures has been appointed for translation into Russian and supported by a PRC governmental grant as a part of state agenda to promote Chinese literature and culture to the world. An expert on history of Russian sinology from Beijing University of Foreign Languages professor Liu Ruomei ḣ㤕ẵ has acted as an editor from the Chinese side of the project, which resulted in a book “Raznye suzhdenia o poezii zhanra ci Wang Guoweia” («Various judgments on ci poetry by Wang Guowei ») published by Moscow`s “Nauka. Vostochnaija Literatura” in 2017. In brief, we may see interesting case of classical poetry first being discussed and evaluated by Wang Guowei using classical wenyan language, later his work was explained to present day audience using easily understood spoken Chinese by scholar Ye Jiaying, and, finally, her popularizing lectures were translated into Russian and became a book for specific and narrow audience — lovers of Chinese poetry and sinologists. Each new step of interpretation of ci genre added new layer of meanings and adjusted ci poetry to different audiences with different level of literacy in Chinese classics. Below I share some observations concerning this interesting case of cross-cultural adjustment. If we take a look at the initial stage of this story, it brings us to Wang Guowei and his interest in ci poetry. Ci has emerged around late Tang period as lyrics accompanying standard melodies, these songs were meant for performance by singing girls at banquets. Since they were about beautiful girls and love affairs, this genre was considered of low taste and even vulgar during a period of its formation and heyday, but ci had gained some appreciation by literati of the later dynasties. Wang Guowei strived to clarify the reason of such appreciation by asserting their aesthetic value and ornate beauty. As a scholar well-versed in classics and classical literature, Wang Guowei wrote his “Talks of ci in the human world” in accordance with the tradition of “words on poetry” either about shi — shihua 䂙䂡 or ci — cihua 䂎䂡 , which were quite popular during earlier periods. His work consists of two scrolls juan 2 , each contains a series of paragraphs expressing author`s views and evaluation of ci written by poets of different periods.
