For instance, the way to address a younger female family member for theManchu nobility class is Nj࿩ ࿩nj .This particular way to address could not only be used when the other is a younger sister or a younger cousin. To address a younger female family member as Nj࿩࿩nj is a way to show some intimacy and also some respect. But this cannot be translated into English, because there is no equivalence to Nj࿩࿩nj in English. In Chapter Eleven, when the address term appeared, there is no way for the readers who are reading the English translation come to be aware of that intimacy between sisters-in-law: ⦻ཛӪ䚃˖Njࡽᰕੜ㿱֐བྷ࿩࿩䈤ˈ㫹 ݯ უྷ䓛кᴹӋнབྷྭˈࡠᓅ ᱟᘾѸṧ˛nj˄ㅜॱаഎ˅ ‘The other day Xi-chun was telling us that Rongs wife is not very well, ’said Lady Wang. ‘What exactly is wrong with her?’(Hawkes, 1973) Here, as the speaker is Nj⦻ཛӪnj , the wife of Jiazheng, who is taking charge of the family’s domestic affairs, also she is the second eldest female of the family. When she is speaking to a younger family member, she must consider the proper address terms to indicate the intimate relations between the family members. However, this linguistic message cannot be conveyed to the readers reading the English translation. As referring to Xichun by saying her name and by addressing her as Njབྷ࿩࿩nj different greatly in terms of the readers emotional common feelings. In conclusion, as cultural features and the linguistic meaning are indivisible, a literary work of such time and cultural distance cannot be fully understood without fully comprehending the specific cultural features underneath. Thus, cultural linguistics studies linking the gaps in between by introducing the cultural features will pave the future researches on The Dream of the Red Chamber. Conclusion Thanks to the great contribution of various translations of The Dream of the Red Chamber, it has received such a wide readership in the West. Nevertheless, compared to the academic achievement in East Asia inspired by the novel, not many studies about The Dream of the Red Chamber have been done in the Western academic field of sinology. Of course it has something to do with the influences of classical Chinese literature on the literary tradition in countries such as Japan and Korea. In addition, despite the difficulty of the literary Chinese classical language, the major barrier is the cultural features that are either unexplained or neglected in the English translation.
